UPDATE (11:34 am): OPP have now tweeted that this is a multi-fatal collision. They tweeted a minute later that the highway would remain closed for several hours more.
EARLIER (Sep 5, 2016 @ 10:05): Hwy 17 is currently closed 30 km north/west of Wawa. About 7:30 this morning the Wawa Volunteer Fire Department and the White River Fire Department responded to a vehicle on fire. Algoma EMS and OPP responded as well. A southbound vehicle left the roadway, struck a rock cut and came back to rest on the highway, and a fire ensued. One person was taken by ambulance to the Lady Dunn Health Centre.
Ontario Provincial Police are unable to give any information at this time.
OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation (TTCI) has been called, both lanes were completely closed at the time of the collision.
At 8:47 OPP notified media that Highway 17 was closed between Wawa and White River. Residents of Dubreuilville cannot travel to Wawa at this time, but could travel to White River. MyWawa is not sure if travelling to White River would be legal as the highway is closed.
Highway 17 at Wawa has been barricaded at the intersection of Hwy 17/101 and is also barricaded at White River. Westbound travellers can go from Wawa (101 East) to Chapleau, Timmins and then Highway 665 to Highway 11; joining Hwy 17 at Nipigon.
