Transport trucks sharing Ontario roads must be safe: Statement by Ontario NDP Transportation Critic

Wayne Gates, Ontario NDP Transportation Critic and MPP for Niagara Falls, issued the following statement regarding Wednesday’s tragic incident on the 400.   “On behalf of Ontario’s New Democrats, I want extend my deepest condolences to the family of the victim of the tragic incident on Highway 400.   Unfortunately, this is not the first time such an incident has occurred on Ontario’s highways and roads. Runaway tires from transport trucks have claimed the lives of two other Ontario motorists in separate incidents, as recently as this fall, near London and Mississauga.   As the Ontario NDP Transportation Critic I have raised serious concerns in the Legislature about the adequacy of Ontario’s commercial truck inspection system, and whether recent closures of inspection facilities and reductions in MTO personnel and resources, are contributing factors in making Ontario’s roads less safe.   I am aware that OPP and MTO investigators are currently reviewing the inspection and safety history of the truck involved in yesterday’s incident, and I await their findings. Ontario drivers need to know that the transport trucks sharing our roads are safe whether these vehicles are registered in Ontario, or in any other jurisdiction, so that tragedies like this never happen again.”
