Two males arrested for numerous thefts from vehicles

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – On May 4, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began an investigation into numerous thefts of vehicles in the City of Elliot Lake.

As the investigation continued victims began to report to police that unknown persons were using their stolen credit cards at local businesses in the city.

As a result of the investigation, on May 23, 2016, two males were arrested.

Shane DERASP, 20 years of age, from Elliot Lake, Ontario was charged with:

  • Possession of a Credit Card, contrary to section 342(1)(c) of the Criminal Code;
  • Fraud Under $5000, contrary to section 380(1)(b) of the Criminal Code; and
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on June 7, 2016.

Trenton RICHER, 19 years of age, from Elliot Lake, Ontario was charged with:

  • Theft, contrary to section 322(1) of the Criminal Code;
  • Possession of a Credit Card, contrary to section 342(1)(c) of the Criminal Code;
  • Fraud Under $5000 (X21), contrary to section 380(1)(b) of the Criminal Code;

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sault Ste. Marie May 27, 2016.

Police retrieved numerous items taken from the vehicles. If anyone had property taken from their vehicles in the past several months please contact Elliot Lake OPP Detachment at 1888-310-1122.
