The Batchawana Volunteer Fire & Rescue Called to Derelict Agawa Bay Gas Station

For the second time in nearly three weeks, the Batchawana Fire & Rescue Department responded to a fire at the derelict Agawa Bay gas station. On May 9th, SE OPP – Wawa, Wawa Volunteer Fire Department, Ministry of Natural Resources fire crew and Batchawana Fire & Rescue responded to the blaze that had spread into the bush behind the old gas station and was posing forest fire threat. Because a construction crew was travelling by with a tanker of water, their efforts to extinguish the fire helped delay it from spreading until the fire departments could arrive.

Today’s fire was confined to a back room of the former Northern Auto gas station, with the fire spreading to the roof. Firefighters wore protective gear in order to protect themselves from the toxic materials that were burning.

Suspicion is that the fire was deliberately set. There has not been any power to the building since it was destroyed by fire in the early hours of Saturday, April 11th, 2009. At that time the property consisted of three buildings, a large store, residence and restuarant/Garage.
