REBUILDING FORT MAC BEGINS
Residents aren’t the only ones coming into Fort McMurray this week. Construction workers and cleanup companies are joining them as they begin the process of rebuilding the northern Alberta city. One construction company estimates the cleanup of fire damage and subsequent rebuilding will take at least two years. The companies have put out the help wanted signs to get the necessary labour force to do the job. Job fairs in Edmonton and Calgary sponsored by Spirit Staffing and Consulting attracted hundreds of applicants last month, some of whom are now on their way or already working in Fort McMurray.
CANADA WOULD BE LEFT OUT IF SPY AGENCY MUST REVEAL SECRETS IN COURT
A senior official with Canada’s electronic spy agency says information from close allies will dry up if the Communications Security Establishment must reveal its closely guarded secrets in open court. Scott Millar says the result could be a lack of information required to ensure the safety and protection of Canadians and Canadian interests. Millar’s warning comes in an affidavit filed in a legal tug-of-war between the federal government and a civil liberties watchdog over what CSE must disclose in court. The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association is suing the surveillance agency, claiming it breaches the constitutional rights of Canadians by intercepting their private communications.

Instead, what he found — amidst the grit and violence and destruction that has consumed large chunks of Iraq and neighbouring Syria — was an Iraqi army that would not back down. “They are crushing them in many ways and pushing them back,” said Smith, the Canadian chief of staff of the Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command for Operation Inherent Resolve, the American-led coalition whose mission is to help guide Iraq’s own forces.
