Strong winds associated with a passage of a cold front has caused numerous power outages from downed trees and limbs in the city and may have sparked a pole fire down the line and fanning the flames of a grass fire in Bruce Mines.

Winds gusting to 60 km/h developed early afternoon causing outages in the Peoples Road west to Gros Cap, Second Line north to city limits, south to Pointe Des Chenes areas around 3pm affecting over 3,500 customers while another outage was reported by the PUC in the  Maki Road north of Avery Road to Lakeshore Drive areas affecting over 1,000 customers.

SaultOnline.com has heard of a few fires being blamed on the strong winds in the Bruce Mines area. Volunteer fire crews and the OPP were dispatched to control the grass fire early this afternoon.  A power line and pole were on  fire at the Bruce station in Plummer Additional township.

The winds are expected to diminish during the evening hours. Summer by the way, officially starts at 6:34 p.m. this evening and lasts until September 22, 10:21 a.m.
