On July 5, 2016, shortly before 3:00 p.m., the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with assistance of Mississauga Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle collision involving two vehicles on Highway 17 at Mississauga First Nation.
A westbound vehicle crossed the highway colliding with the guardrail on the south shoulder of the highway. An eastbound vehicle then collided with the idle westbound vehicle. The highway was closed for approximately 20 minutes. The eastbound vehicle passenger and the westbound vehicle driver sustained minor injuries and were transported to the local hospital as a precaution. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
As a result of the investigation, the driver of the westbound vehicle, Alex GAMELIN, 76 years of age, from Bruce Mines, Ontario, was charged with:
- Traffic on Through Highway-Fail to Yield, contrary to section 136(2) of the Highway Traffic Act;
- Driver-Fail to Properly Wear Seat Belt, contrary to section 106(2) of the Highway Traffic Act.
Vehicle drivers are asked to take responsibility for their personal safety and that of their family. Make sure that all persons in the vehicle wear their seat belts.
