Additional funding of more than $300,000 was recently announced for hospice beds in Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Kirkland Lake and Englehart. This investment increases funding support for existing hospice beds by $15,000 per bed (up from $90,000 to $105,000).
This means enhanced compassionate end-of-life support for Northerners who spend their final days in a hospice bed.
Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) in Sault Ste. Marie and Maison Vale Hospice in Sudbury will receive funding increases of $150,000 each. Kirkland and District Hospital along with Englehart and District Hospital will each receive $15,000 to continue their one bedroom suite palliative care model, co-located with the hospital.
With NE LHIN support, last year Maison Vale Hospice and ARCH provided residential care to 150 people. The NE LHIN supports palliative education courses to professional groups and volunteers, and funding to the VON to hire regional nurse consultants with expert knowledge in palliative pain and symptom management.
