Our organization, Superior Children’s Centre, understands that the Back-to-School season can be particularly stressful for children, and their families. In recognition of the fact that many families have a difficult time ensuring their children have the basic necessities to start school, Superior Children’s Centre had initiated the Back to School and Ready to Learn-Backpack program in 2005.
Our primary goal is to prepare children to be successful in school by providing them with the basic supplies they need on their first day of school. Each backpack is equipped with two pencils, eraser, ruler, markers, pencil crayons, sharpener, paper and pencil case. Young teens packs have the same with the addition of a binder, dividers, highlighters and a pen.
Costs have raised a lot since 2005 and each year they rise even more. This year we managed to support 49 children with a backpack at the cost of $1387.82. These monies are donated monies from the businesses of Wawa, Clubs of Wawa and community members.
How do we know how many backpacks are needed? The services of Wawa are asked if any of their clients are in need of a backpack. Each name is anonymous to SCC unless the parent comes in requesting one, themselves. The numbers are taken with the age and sex of the child, to try and individualize them a little and they are picked up or distributed to the agency who called for them.
Superior Children’s Centre, Chadwic Home Inc., Algoma Family Services, Algoma District Social Services, Children’s Aid Society, Michipicoten First Nation and the parents of the children, would like to take this opportunity to thank Rotary Club of Wawa, Canadian Tire Inc, Millette’s General Contracting, Northern Lights Ford Mercury, Wawa Janitorial Services, Fenlon’s Pharmacy, Canada Brokerlink Inc, Wawa Medical Centre, Mission Motors, RTK WP Dev Rentech, and Mary Lesperance for their generous contributions to the Back Pack Program 2016.
Thank You, everyone, for another successful year.
