The torrential downpour that hit Sault Ste. Marie yesterday afternoon causing power outages also wreaked damage north of the Sault. Highway 17 had ponding (happens when water settles and stays on the highway). Driveways, highway shoulders and guardposts all showed wear and tear from Mamainse to the Soo. Estimates by mid-afternon was that 40-60mm of rain had already fallen, and the possibillity of 10-40mm more to come.
Broadspectrum was out marking washed out areas with traffic cones (highway damage), and in some places heavy equipment was already being mobilized to repair damage.
Environment Canada warns that heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. They caution for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.
