What do Mr. Kusic, Mrs. Bernath and Ms. Portis all have in common? These three all have a love for volleyball! The annual elementary volleyball tournament was held at MHS on Thursday, Nov. 24. Seven teams competed from Wawa, Dubreuilville, Chapleau and Hornepayne. The games started at 8:30 am and ended shortly after 2:30 pm. The day was filled with some pretty amazing serves, bumps, digs, hits and sets.
The boys team comprised of Julien, Josh, Austin, Wyatt, Hayden, Carson, Jordan, Max, Kolby, Donovan, Caleb, and Ben. The team was coached by Mr. Kusic. This team was undefeated in the tournament. Many spectators marvelled at the fact that they were only in elementary school. Their sets, spikes and teamwork were amazing. The boys went on to defeat the Hornepayne Hornets in the championship game winning both sets and ultimately bringing the trophy home. Congratulations boys!
Ms. Portis was the coach for the girl’s team. The players, Kendra, Mika, Annika M., Annika J., Katherine, Brooke, Zoe, Trista, Cassey, and McKenna showed us all what four practices a week can do – watch a group of girls gel together as a team. The girls were in first place after the round robin play. They then went on to the semi-final game playing their best game ever. The girls fell short losing 23 – 25 which placed them in third. It was a tough loss but it made them realize that the old saying, “It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s how you play the game” really does have meaning. Well done girls! The winner of the girls division was the Hornepayne Hornets.
Thanks to Mrs. Bernath for organizing the tournament! Your hours of hard work made for a very memorable day for the players and coaches. A special big Thank You also goes out to the staff and students of MHS. Without the assistance of Sarah, Megan, Justin, Autumn, Talus, Beau, Rayanne, Makenna, Bree, Mackenzie, Jamie, Lyndsi, Matthew, Patrick, Mrs. Kusic and Mrs. Fellinger this day would not have been possible. Volley On!
SJD is the place to be!
