Portion of Hwy 144 Closed for Public Safety – UPDATE

On December 6, 2016, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North East Region Emergency Response Team (ERT) with the assistance of the OPP North East Region Canine, located and arrested two male parties.

Police have now opened the highway as public safety is no longer a concern.

The OPP appreciate the public’s cooperation while this incident was occurring.

Press release issued 12:26 p.m.

On December 6, 2016, at approximately 9:40 a.m., officers from the South Porcupine Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) attempted to intercept a stolen motor vehicle travelling north bound on Highway 144.

The motor vehicle was abandoned and two suspects left the motor vehicle on foot into a wooded area off of Highway 144.

As such, Highway 144 has been closed for public safety at Highway 101 west of Timmins, up to a rest stop several kilometers south of Highway 661.

Police are warning the public to avoid this area and to report any suspicious activity by calling 1-888-310-1122.

The OPP will provide updates as information becomes available.
