EARLIER (Dec 14, 2016 @ 08:09) –

mrradar-dec14-01At 2:43 a.m. the Wawa Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police advised that Hwy 17 from Batchawana to Wawa had been closed due to whiteout conditions. The highway remains closed at this time (8 a.m.). The screenshot to the right shows the weather pattern at 8:10 a.m.

Environment Canada stated that snow squalls continue, Under the snow squall bands, visibilities will be significantly reduced due to the heavy snow combined with blowing snow, and snow will quickly accumulate. West to east snow squalls will begin to shift south Wednesday afternoon. Local snowfall amounts of 20 to 40 centimetres are likely under the most intense snow squalls overnight and Wednesday (11:57 p.m. Tuesday night).

MyWawa was travelling home on Highway 17 last night 6 p.m. and turned back just south of Mamainse Harbour due to whiteout conditions then. The above photo was taken at 7:15 p.m. somewhere on Blueberry Flats. The snow was accumulating at that time, however, the poor visibility was not just poor, but we were at a dead stop at some times as the winds swirled the heavy snow around. The decision to turn back was made at 7 p.m. after consulting with radar. MyWawa has also been told that the Greyhound bus is waiting on the side of the road at Batchawana for the road to open.

According to the Algoma District School Board website: All transportation services are operating as scheduled for Chapleau, Hornepayne, Wawa, White River.
