Morning News – January 13, 2017


Weather – In what seems to be the norm these days, a  snow squall warning is in effect for Sault Ste. Marie to St. Joseph Island.

Roads – All Highways are open at this time. 

Highway 17 from Sault Ste. Marie to Montreal River Harbour is snow packed with bare and wet road and snow-covered sections and poor visibility. From Montreal River Harbour to White River the highway is snow packed.

Community – The Wawa Winter Carnival Committee has announced that they will be holding the popular Vendor’s Market Friday night of the Carnival. Contact them for information.

Despite the very poor conditions last night; snow removal continued for both the highway and locally. The snow banks continue to rise. Drive carefully.

Travel in Northern Ontario can be difficult in the wintertime. The travelers on the Greyhound to Toronto last night had to wait in Wawa from about 7 p.m. Thursday night until about 5 a.m. when Highway 17 was reopened.

National – According to Natural Resources Canada, a 2.7-magnitude earthquake was recorded 20 kilometres east of Halifax at about 5:10 p.m. Thursday, January 12th.

Canada’s Ethics Commissioner is investigating allegations that Justin Trudeau breached the Conflict of Interest Act when he accepted an offer to travel on the helicopter of a billionaire friend whose foundation does business with the government.
