Trembinski Wins 500 & 1000m Titles at Ontario Provincial Championships

“Retired” Sault Ste. Marie speed skater Gary Trembinski came out of retirement this past weekend to skate the Ontario Provincial Championships at the Brewer Park Speed Skating Oval in Ottawa, Ontario. Trembinski won both the 500-metre and 1000-metre titles.

“It feels good to know I’ve still got some speed. It was a fun weekend with family there to support me. My parents and most of my relatives had limited opportunities to see me skate at a high level, so it was a chance to show them in person what I’ve got,” Trembinski said.

Gary spent the last five years in Calgary, Alberta training with the Elite Athlete Pathway program at the Olympic Oval before walking away from the sport in May, 2016.

“It’s tough to walk away from a sport that you’ve dedicated so much time and effort to. I never had an opportunity to skate the Provincial Championships as I made the Canada Cup circuit relatively quickly,” Gary said. Trembinski announced in late December his intentions to skate the Ontario Provincial Championships, and the Michigan State Championships to be held on January 28th in Petoskey, Michigan.

With Trembinski’s two-distance win, he was named to represent Team Ontario in Edmonton, Alberta February 4-5, 2017, in the Age Class Championships.“I haven’t decided whether or not I want to attend that competition. I enjoyed racing this weekend, I’m looking forward to the Michigan State Championships, but I’m undecided as far as Edmonton comes. I’ll make that decision over the course of the week,” Gary said from Hamilton, where he is currently enrolled in the Ontario Real Estate College.

“I’ll keep skating for as long as I can, for as long as I enjoy it. But there comes a time in life where you have to bite the bullet and move on. I’m thoroughly enjoying my real estate courses and I look forward to joining my cousins Kristen and Rob Trembinski at EXIT Realty Lake Superior come the spring.”
