At the Board Meeting held on March 21, 2017, the Algoma District School Board of Trustees voted to accept the Senior Administration recommendation and approved Arthur Henderson Public School be closed and the JK-3 school population be relocated to Central Algoma Elementary School. This will be contingent upon the Algoma District School Board applying for and receiving Ministry of Education Capital Funding for an addition to Central Algoma Elementary School.
Superintendent of Education Marcy Bell and Director Lucia Reece provided a review of the Pupil Accommodation Review process to date for Arthur Henderson Public School. In March 2015, the Ministry of Education released revised Pupil Accommodation Review Guidelines to provide a framework for school boards to undertake pupil accommodation reviews to determine the future of a school or group of schools.
During the Pupil Accommodation Review Process the Board of Trustees identified Arthur Henderson Public School for placement on ‘under review status.’ The Board of Trustees approved a Modified Accommodation Review Process for Arthur Henderson Public School.
There were two public meetings held, one on January 26, 2017 and the second on February 2, 2017.
Upon the completion of the public meetings, Senior Administration produced a final report recognizing the public input received during each of the two public meetings and feedback from the affected municipalities, the Town of Bruce Mines and the Township of Plummer
Additional. Senior Administration prepared the Final Staff Report after carefully following the deliberations of the public meetings and input from affected municipalities. The Final Staff Report was posted on the Board’s website on February 16, 2017.
The date of closure and relocation of the students and programs currently housed at Arthur Henderson Public School is contingent upon Ministry of Education Capital Funding and the completion of the required classroom additions to Central Algoma Elementary School. As this process takes time, there is no change to the status of the school for the 2017-2018 school year. A transition plan will be implemented to facilitate a smooth transition of the Arthur Henderson JK-3 students to Central Algoma Elementary School once funding and construction plans are secured.
Vice-Chair Sheryl Evans-Price acknowledged and thanked those members of the public and municipalities who provided input throughout this review process.
