Video evidence leads to arrest

On May 3, 2017, at approximately 11:49 a.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a Break and Enter call on Albert Street in Elliot Lake.

The complainant reported that someone had entered her house sometime overnight and stole a purse and a wallet. The suspect then decided to use cards from the wallet and purse to make purchases at numerous retail locations in Elliot Lake. Those retail locations had video surveillance and recorded a male making the unauthorized transactions. Police recognized the male after viewing the surveillance.

Wesley MAYNES, 59 years of age, of Elliot Lake, Ontario, was charged with:

Possession of a credit card, contrary to section 342(1)(c) of the Criminal Code (CC)
Use credit card data, contrary to section 342(3) of the CC
Fail to Comply with Recognizance, contrary to section 145(3) of the CC

The accused was held for bail and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on May 8, 2017.
