Gas theft leads to other charges


On June 7, 2017, shortly after 7:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a theft of gas over $50.00 from a local gas station in the Town of Bruce Mines.

The vehicle had left in a westbound direction on Highway 17. East Algoma OPP with assistance from Sault Ste. Marie OPP, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, Garden River Anishinabek Police Service and Batchewana Police Service, kept watched for the westbound vehicle. Shortly after 6:30 p.m., Sault Ste. Marie OPP located the vehicle at a local restaurant parking lot in the City of Sault Ste. Marie. While speaking to the male driver officers determined there was cannabis marihuana in the vehicle, the driver was arrested and the vehicle searched.

As a result of the investigation, Jonathan METCALF, 39 years of age, from Pembroke, Ontario was charged with:

Theft Under $5000, contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code.
Possession of a Scheduled II Substance- Cannabis Marihuana- Over 30 grams, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA);
Trafficking Schedule II Substance- Cannabis Marihuana -Under 3 kilograms, contrary to section 5(1) of the CDSA; and
Possession of a Schedule II Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking- Under 3 kilograms, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie July 10, 2017 for the drug charges and the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on July 13, 2017 for the theft charge.
