A Blind River business owner has been acknowledged by being named in the “Your Convenience Manager” trade magazine in the hall of fame.

Jim Smith, owner of Mic’s Kwik Way since 1996, when he took over operations of the store from his parents who opened the store in 1968. In 1998 Smith added a Subway Sandwich franchise to the location and expanded the footprint to a 2,000 square foot store.

The store has been the place to go in the town of 3,500 along the North Shore carrying everything from  soft drinks to dog food. The store employs 16 in the area featuring a wide range of ages from young to senior. Jim said, “I like to pair up a younger worker with a senior , this way the younger worker learns about work ethic and customer service from someone who has experience”

Jim has seen a lot of changes in the convenience store market over the years. He said at one point ,tobacco made up 50 to 60% of his business, today it’s 12% to make up for that loss, the store increased it’s product line to include fresh flowers, specialty pet foods and  general grocery.

Mic’s Kwik Way also contributes back to the community in supporting fundraising activities as well as helping with the breakfast clubs at local schools.
