On December 22, 2017, shortly after 1:00 p.m., members from the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Detachment set up a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check point at the junction of Highway 548 and Highway 17 within the Tarbutt-Tarbutt Additional Township.
Shortly after 2:00 p.m., a pick-up truck approached the RIDE location and the officer observed the front licence plate to have no validation sticker. A licence plate query was made and revealed the plates were not authorized for that vehicle. The male driver could not produce valid insurance for the vehicle.
As a result of the investigation, Shane WHITTY, 43 years of age from Richards Landing, Ontario was charged with:
Owner Operate Motor Vehicle on Highway- No Insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act; and with
Use Plates Not Authorized for Vehicle, contrary to section 12(1)(d) of the Highway Traffic Act.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste Marie on February 28, 2018.
