Sault Police Officer Charged with Sexual Assault

Media Release from Greater Sudbury Police Service

On May 17, 2018, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service received a report of a Sexual Assault allegation against one of its Officers. The alleged victim is not a member of the Police Service. The allegations are not related to individual’s position as a Police Officer and as such, in consultation with the Special Investigations Unit (S.I.U.), it was determined that it did not fall within their mandate.

In order to protect the integrity of the investigation, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service contacted Greater Sudbury Police Service Criminal Investigations Division Detectives to thoroughly investigate the allegation.

On Thursday, June 28, 2018, the 59-year old man was arrested and charged with one count of Sexual Assault. He will appear in Court in Sault Ste. Marie on July 30, 2018 to answer to this charge. His name cannot be released at this time as the information has not yet been sworn to through the Court process. Due to victim privacy and the judicial process no additional details related to the incident will be provided.

At the onset of the investigation, the member was suspended from duty with pay as per the Police Services Act and will remain on suspension.

An additional investigation of misconduct has been initiated under the Police Services Act.

“The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service takes the conduct of its members on and off duty very seriously. The community expects and deserves its Officers to conduct themselves with the utmost integrity. We have faith in the judicial system that will consider all of the evidence available. We hold our responsibility to public trust, accountability and transparency in high regard. We are committed to excellence in our community and we expect the same commitment from our members. As the matter is now before the Courts, I am not in a position to comment any further at this time,” said Chief Hugh Stevenson, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
