Unconfirmed reports quickly turned into confirmation as Popeyes CEO Atiq Ahmed confirmed (by phone) this afternoon that he will be opening up one of his outlets in the former Burger King location at the corner of McNabb and Great Northern Road. The anticipated opening date is close to the end of November as contractors and work crews are readying the property. More details will soon follow.
Montana’s Barbeque & Bar is also slated to open up here in Sault Ste. Marie. General Manager Lisa Bonin confirmed that renovations are going smoothly and she hopes to open the doors by Labour Day weekend.
Assistant Manager Sarah Ooi said hiring is still going on and they have hired around 80 people so far. The hours of operation are tentatively going to be Sunday – Thursday 11 am – 11pm and Friday/Saturday 11 am -12 pm. Ooi said that what makes this Montana’s a bit different than others is “that this Montana’s has a unique location as they don’t generally have waterfront locations, as well as not all of them have patios.” Sarah Ooi also said that golf enthusiasts will be happy to know that they are keeping the Golf Simulator.
In other local restaurant news, I spoke with Maureen Hart, the Senior Director of Communications & Corporate Affairs of Recipe Unlimited Corp (formerly Cara Operations Limited). Ms. Hart confirmed that the rumours of East Side Mario’s and Kelsey’s jumping into the Sault Ste. Marie market is unsubstantiated. As per a previous email to me ” I am not aware of any other of our restaurants that are on a list for opening (in Sault Ste. Marie) stated Ms Hart.
