TRAFFIC STOP RESULTS IN MULTIPLE CHARGES

(CARNARVON TWP, ON) – On Friday, November 2, 2018, an officer from the Manitoulin-Espanola detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting traffic patrols of Highway 551 in Carnarvon Township, Ontario.

At approximately 3:34 p.m., the officer observed a violation and conducted a traffic stop. Alcohol was located within the vehicle.

As a result of an investigation, Marshall MIGWANS, age 25, of M’Chigeeng First Nation, Ontario, was issued Provincial Offences Notices for:

  • Speeding 1-49 Km/h over the posted limit, contrary to section 128 of the Highway traffic Act (HTA);
  • Drive Motor Vehicle – No Licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the HTA;
  • Drive Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act; and
  • Fail to Surrender Insurance Card, contrary to section 3(1) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

 

SUSPENDED DRIVER CHARGED IN BILLINGS TOWNSHIP

(LITTLE CURRENT, ON) – On Thursday, November 1, 2018, an officer from the Manitoulin-Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was on traffic patrol of Highway 540 in Billings Township, Ontario.

At approximately 8:45 p.m., the officer observed a traffic violation and conducted a stop. An investigation revealed that the driver was suspended.

As a result, Jason SIMKIN, age 47, of Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation, Ontario has been charged with:

  • Driving While under Suspension, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay, Ontario, on January 10, 2018.

 

SHOPLIFTER CHARGED WITH THEFT

(ESPANOLA, ON) – On Thursday, November 1, 2018 at approximately 10:39 a.m., officers from the Manitoulin-Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of a female shoplifter at a business on Centre Street in Espanola, Ontario.

Officers located the female and an investigation revealed that she had left the store without paying for several items.

As a result, Venessa SHEARS, age 32, of Espanola, Ontario has been charged with:

  • Theft Under $5000 – shoplifting, contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola, Ontario on January 7, 2019.

CANNABIS ACT CHARGE FOR SUSPENDED DRIVER

(ESPANOLA, ON) – On Thursday, November 1, 2018, officers from the Manitoulin-Espanola detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) checks on Hardwood Road in Baldwin Township, Ontario.

At approximately 4:56 p.m., the officers checked a vehicle and located a quantity of alcohol and suspected marijuana inside.

As a result of the investigation, Leonard ARNOTT, age 52, from Espanola, Ontario has been charged with:

  • Driving While Under Suspension – two counts-, contrary to section 53(1) of the Highway Traffic Act;
  • Drive Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available, contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Act  2017; and
  • Drive Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola, Ontario on January 10, 2019.
