Government of Canada investment helps rural and indigenous communities better respond to opportunities and build their economic development capacity

February 14, 2019 – Wawa, ON — Businesses and residents in the Superior East region will benefit from improved economic development opportunities thanks to a Government of Canada investment of $45,000. The FedNor funding will assist the Superior East Community Futures Development Corporation (CFDC) to undertake a regional strategic planning process, in partnership with four municipalities and five First Nations in the region, with a particular focus on the mining, forestry and tourism sectors.

The announcement was made today by the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor.

Specifically, the funding will enable the Superior East CFDC and its regional partners to retain the services of a qualified consulting firm to develop a strategic vision and detailed action plan with targets and milestones. The resulting five-year strategic plan will help communities prioritize a broad range of tangible initiatives, and enable them to better respond to potential economic development opportunities.

  • The Superior East CFDC is one of 24 Community Futures Development Corporations in Northern Ontario funded by FedNor to provide financing, mentoring and business development services to Northern Ontario businesses and communities. CFDCs are community-based, not-for-profit organizations run by volunteer boards and staffed by experienced business and economic development professionals.
  • This project helps to deliver on key priorities of the Prosperity and Growth Strategy for Northern Ontario, which outlines the Government of Canada’s approach to ensure the region can fully benefit from the national Innovation and Skills Plan.
  • The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation.
