(LITTLE CURRENT, ON) – On Tuesday, February 26, 2019, an officer from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting traffic patrol on Highway 6 in the Township of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands, Ontario.
At approximately 10:00 p.m., the officer observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle fled, and was not immediately located by the police. A short time later a motor vehicle collision was reported involving the suspect vehicle.
At approximately 11:44 p.m., officers from the United Chiefs and Council of Manitoulin (UCCM) Anishnaabe Police responded to a disturbance at a residence on Highway 6 on Sheguiandah First Nation, Ontario.
OPP and UCCM Police attended the scene, and determined that the suspects who had failed to stop for police, had been involved in a collision and had subsequently entered a residence.
As a result of the investigation, 26-year-old Cecile NOOTCHTAI, from Atikameksheng First Nation, Ontario, has been charged with:
Trespassing at Night, contrary to section 177 of the Criminal Code (CC);
Unlawfully in a Dwelling House, contrary to section 349(1) of the CC; and
Mischief Under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC.
Isaiah BRIDEAU, 24-years-old, from Atikameksheng First Nation, Ontario, has been charged with:
Dangerous Operation, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the CC;
Failure to Stop After Accident, contrary to section 320.16(1) of the CC;
Flight from Police Officer, contrary to section 320.17 of the CC;
Trespassing at Night, contrary to section 177 of the CC;
Unlawfully in a Dwelling House, contrary to section 349(1) of the CC;
Mischief Under $5,000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC;
Drive Motor Vehicle – No Licence, contrary to section 32(1) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA);
Operate Unsafe Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 84 of the HTA;
Race a Motor Vehicle – Stunt, contrary to section 172(1) of the HTA; and
Having Care or Control of a Motor Vehicle with Open Container of Liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act.
Both accused are being held in custody, they are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, Ontario, on March 4, 2019 and in Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay, Ontario, on March 6, 2019.
