116 Charges During Easter Weekend

(BLIND RIVER, ON) – The members of the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted their Easter Long Weekend Seatbelt Campaign from April 19 to April 22, 2019. Officers hope to see all drivers and passengers safely buckled in throughout the year.

During the campaign a total of 116 charges were laid. The charges included 90 speeding charges, 12 “other” Highway Traffic Act charges, five hazardous moving violation charges, and one distracted driving charge.

Although no seatbelt charges were laid, two impaired charges were laid which is an increase from zero during the 2018 campaign. Two warn range suspensions were also issued over the long weekend. The OPP would like to remind the public that there is no safe amount of drug or alcohol consumption when driving.

The East Algoma OPP also responded to 89 calls for service during this time ranging from 911 hang ups, animal complaints, domestic disputes, traffic complaints and motor vehicle collisions.

There were neither any serious personal injury collisions nor fatalities on the local highways, waterways or trails.
