(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – On May 2, 2019, at approximately 11:00 a.m. members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) arrested a male in relation to a previous disturbance call at a residence on Gillanders Road in the City of Elliot Lake, Ontario.
On April 12, 2019 police were called to Gillanders Road where a male was attempting to break a window of a residence. In an attempt to stop the male, the homeowner was assaulted. The male fled on foot and police located him a short time later in a neighbouring backyard shed. The male had a large metal hammer in his hand and appeared to be highly intoxicated by drug and/or alcohol. Police tried numerous times to speak to the male with negative results. The male would not co-operate or comply with any directions given by police to drop the hammer. As a result, police utilized the taser to safely and effectively carry out an arrest.
Keith MEAWASIGE, 40 years of age, from Elliot Lake, Ontario, was charged with:
Fail to Comply with Probation Order (two counts), contrary to section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code (CC),
Assault with intent to resist arrest, contrary to section 270(1)(b) of the CC,
Assault Causing Bodily Harm (two counts), contrary to section 267(b) of the CC,
Unlawfully in Dwelling House, contrary to section 349(1) of the CC,
Assault, contrary to section 266 of the CC,
Uttering Threats – Cause death or Bodily Harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC.
The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Blind River, Ontario on May 3, 2019.
