The Desbarats Christmas Bird Count is a back for a fourth year! On December 28, 2019, you can help count birds within a 12km radius of Desbarats.
In the first three years, we have recorded 53 species and over 6000 individual birds. Can you help us add to that this year?
The Kensington Conservancy is still looking for more participants to take part in this year’s count. If you live within the count circle and have bird feeders set up, we want you!
The count circle includes the towns of Richards Landing, Hilton Beach, Desbarats and Bruce Mines. Areas such as McCarrel Lake, parts of Laird Township and Gordon Lake are included as well. All counting must be done within this circle.
Started in 1900, the Christmas Bird Count is North America’s longest-running Citizen Science project. Counts happen in over 2000 localities throughout the Western Hemisphere. The information collected by thousands of volunteer participants forms one of the world’s largest sets of wildlife survey data. The results are used daily by conservation biologists and naturalists to assess the population trends and distribution of birds throughout North America.
