Algoma Power is advising that power restoration has begun. Power has now been restored to customers in the Havilland area. API will continue to work through their system to restore power in sections.

Earlier Update

Equipment failure early this morning caused an outage north of Sault Ste. Marie affecting over 3,000 Algoma Power customers in the Batchewana, Goulais, Searchmont and Heyden areas. Algoma Power continues to work with Hydro One on restoration plans.

Multiple work groups and provincial authorities have been engaged to resolve the equipment issues. Our priority is to get the power restored.

Despite concerns circulating that the outage was caused by an equipment failure and could last up to three days, Algoma Power anticipates power will be restored to all residential, seasonal, and small business customers later this evening. Local stores in the Sault quickly sold out of portable generators as people affected by the outage scrambled to keep fridges, heating appliances and water pumps running.

We attempted to reach out to Algoma Power earlier today to determine the cause of the outage but have yet to receive a response, no doubt due to the urgency in restoring power.
