S&P/TSX composite down in early trading, while U.S. stock markets were mixed

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down in early trading as the heavyweight financial and industrial sectors moved lower and U.S. stock markets put in a mixed showing.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 56.48 points at 15,777.26.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 67.72 points at 27,204.58. The S&P 500 index was up 2.94 points at 3,210.12, while the Nasdaq composite was up 64.06 points at 10,017.81.

The Canadian dollar traded for 74.59 cents US compared with 74.50 cents US on Tuesday.

The July crude contract was up 10 cents at US$38.29 per barrel and the July natural gas contract was up nearly two cents nearly US$1.79 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was up US$9.70 at US$1,731.60 an ounce and the July copper contract was up nearly six cents at nearly US$2.66 a pound.
