Animal Cruelty and Assault Charges Result from Domestic Dispute

(WAWA, ON) – On July 3, 2020, at approximately 9:45 a.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic dispute in Wawa.

As a result of the investigation, a 30-year-old person was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Assault – Spousal, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Overcome Resistance by Attempting to Choke, Suffocate or Strangle another Person, contrary to section 246(a) of the CC, and
  • Cruelty to animals – unnecessary pain, suffering or injury, contrary to section 445.1(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in September, 2020, in Wawa.

Chapleau Resident Charged for Breaching Release Conditions

(CHAPLEAU, ON) – On July 3, 2020, at approximately 1:00 a.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call regarding a person breaching their release conditions.

As a result of the investigation, an 18-year-old person, from Chapleau, was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Failing to comply with conditions of undertaking given to officer in charge, contrary to section 145(5.1) of the Criminal Code (CC).

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in October, 2020, in Chapleau.

Chapleau OPP Layes Charge for Bail Violation

(CHAPLEAU, ON) – On July 2, 2020, at approximately 8:15 p.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the report of a person breaching their court ordered release conditions.

Officer located the person on Grey Street at approximately 8:40 p.m. and place them under arrest. As a result of the investigation, Daniel TURNER, 25 years-of-age, from Chapleau, was charged with the following:

  • Failure to comply with released order – other than to attend court, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC).

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on October 19, 2020, in Chapleau.

Assault and Mischief Charges Laid after Domestic Dispute

(HORNEPAYNE, ON) – On July 2, 2020, at approximately 1:15 p.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a domestic dispute in Hornepayne.

As a result of the investigation, a 31-year-old person, from Hornepayne, was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Assault – Spousal, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC), and
  • Mischief – Domestic, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC.

The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in September, 2020, in Hornepayne.

Youth Charged with Numerous Offences

(THESSALON, ON)- On July 1, 2020, members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a threats complaint in the Town of Thessalon.

Investigation determined, a youth had threatened his parents and damaged some personal property.

As a result of the investigation, a 17 year old, from Thessalon, was charged with:

  • Uttering Threats-Cause Death or Bodily Harm, contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC);
  • Mischief, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC; and with
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on August 13, 2020.

 

Two Arrested and Drugs Seized as Result of Traffic Stop

(BRUCE MINES, ON)- On July 1, 2020, shortly after 7:00 p.m., members from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), East Algoma Crime Unit and Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB) initiated a traffic stop on Highway 17 in the Town of Bruce Mines. Two occupants of the vehicle were arrested.

Police located and seized over 60 grams of suspected cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamines tablets, a wallet containing over $70 in Canadian currency, a cell phone and drug paraphernalia (no monetary value for the drugs available at the time of this media release).

As a result of the investigation, Nathaniel BATES, age 24 of Blind River, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking-Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA);
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking-Other Drugs, contrary to section 5(2) of the CDSA; and with
  • Possession Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code.

Richard VANEVERY, age 29, of Iron Bridge, was charged with:

  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking-Cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Both accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on September 17, 2020.

 

Bail Violations – Brother Remanded into Custody

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON)- On June 30, 2020, shortly after 6:30 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a family dispute at a residence on Brunswick Walk in the City of Elliot Lake.

Investigation determined two brothers were having an argument and one was on conditions to Keep the Peace and be of Good Behaviour.

As a result of the investigation, Kenneth NIELSEN, age 53 of Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  •  Failure to Comply with Probation Order, contrary to section 162.2(4) of the Criminal Code

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice Video Bail in Blind River on July 1, 2020 and was remanded into custody.
