Flight From Peace Officer Nets Charges

Shortly after 11:30 p.m., on November 20, 2020, members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on patrol duties on Government Road in Johnson Township when police observed a pick-up truck parked in the middle of Government Road with its lights off.

The vehicle then quickly turned its lights back on once it noticed a vehicle coming from behind which was an OPP officer. The officer then followed the pick-up truck at a distance at which point the vehicle accelerated on Cloudslee Road in Plummer Additional Township.

Police activated their emergency lights and the vehicle immediately turned into a residential property and accessed a trail beside the driveway. The pick-up truck then accelerated in heavy mud but was unable to continue as the trail had come to an end.

As a result of the investigation, Amy COSGROVE, age 42, from Thessalon First Nation was charged with:

Flight from Peace Officer, contrary to section 320.17 of Criminal Code; and with
Operate a Motor Vehicle without Insurance, contrary to section 2(1)(a) of the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Blind River on December 12, 2020.
