ARREST MADE AFTER SEARCH WARRANT EXECUTED

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – On March 13, 2021, at approximately 9:00 p.m. East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) executed a search warrant at a townhouse on Spruce Avenue in Elliot Lake.

A person was arrested inside the residence who had numerous warrants outstanding.

The OPP’s Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), East Algoma Crime Unit, Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau (OCEB), Canine Unit, Emergency Response Team (ERT), Forensic Identification Services (FIS), and uniform members were involved with the investigation.

Rachel JACOBS, 35 years-old, of Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Fail to Comply with Release Order, contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Theft Under $5000 – Shoplifting, contrary to section 334(b) of the CC,
  • Theft Under $5000, contrary to section 334(b) of the CC,
  • Break and Enter, contrary to section 348(1)(a) of the CC,
  • Personation With Intent, contrary to section 403(1)(b) of the CC,
  • Fail to Comply – Summons, contrary to section 145(3) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice Bail Court in Sault Ste Marie on March 15, 2021.

 

OPP ARREST PERSON AFTER DISTURBANCE CALL CITY BUS

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – On March 11, 2021, at approximately 11:45 a.m. East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were called to a disturbance on Canmet Road in Elliot Lake.

The complainant reported an intoxicated person was causing a disturbance on a City bus and refusing to leave. When police arrived a short time later, the person had exited the bus and was still drinking a bottle of wine. In addition, it was learned the person had outstanding warrants out for their arrest. Subsequently, the person was arrested and lodged until sober for their safety.

Darryl NEWTON, 50 years-old, of Elliot Lake, was charged with:

  • Theft Under $5000 – Shoplifting, contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Causing a Disturbance, contrary to section 175(1)(a) of the CC,
  • Assault With Intent to Resist Arrest, contrary to section 270(1)(b) of the CC,
  • Fail to Comply With Probation Order, contrary to section 733.1(1) of the CC,
  • Being Intoxicated in a Public Place, contrary to section 31(4) of the Liquor License Act (LLA).

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on April 6, 2021.

 

MANITOULIN OPP LAYS IMPAIRED BY DRUG CHARGE

(BALDWIN TOWNSHIP, ON) – On March 13, 2021, at approximately 5:50 a.m., officers from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint where a westbound vehicle was all over the road on Highway 17 in Baldwin Township.

Police located the vehicle parked at a local gas station parking lot at the junction of Highways 17 and 6. The driver was slumped over the steering wheel. Further investigation revealed that the driver had consumed suspected controlled substances.

The accused was arrested at 5:55 a.m., and transported to the Espanola Detachment to conduct further testing.

As a result of the investigation, Matthew KOBELKA, 33 years-of-age from Sudbury, was charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired-Alcohol-Drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code;
  • Possession of Schedule I Substance-Opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled and Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA); and with
  • Possession of Schedule I Substance-Other Drugs, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice In Espanola on May 3, 2021.   The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS) and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

 

MANITOULIN OPP RESPOND TO COLLISION – MULTIPLE CHARGES LAID

(ESPANOLA, ON) – On March 12, 2021, officers from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 in Lorne Township.

As a result of the investigation, officers located suspected Methamphetamine, Hydromorphone and Cocaine in the vehicle. Additionally, officers seized the following prohibited weapons:

  • Switch blade knives
  • Flash-light conducted energy weapon
  • Brass knuckles
  • Extendable baton
  • Pepper Spray

As a result of the investigation, Tracy PYETTE, 29 years-of-age, from Espanola, was charged with:

  • Unauthorized Possession of Weapon, contrary to section 91(2) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order, contrary to section 117.01(1) of the CC,
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC,
  • Possession of a Schedule I substance – Methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
  • Fail to Remain, contrary to section 200(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act.

Trever GILL, 49 years-of-age from Sudbury, was charged with:

  • Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon, contrary to section 91(2) of the CC (five counts) ,
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC (six counts),
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order, contrary to section 117.01(1) of the CC (six counts),
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the CC,
  • Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Opioid (other than heroin), contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA,
  • Possess Unmarked Cigarettes, contrary to section 29(2) of the Tobacco Tax Act.

Both accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario court of justice in Espanola on April 12, 2021.

 

MANITOULIN OPP ARRESTS IMPAIRED DRIVER ON HIGHWAY 17

(ESPANOLA, ON) – On March 13, 2021, at approximately 3:13 p.m., officers from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 17 in Nairn-Hyman Township.

Officers located the vehicle and determined that the driver had been consuming alcohol. As a result of the investigation, Cyprien NGAYABAHIGA, 28 years of age, of Niagara Falls was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and Drugs, contrary to section 320.14(10(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Drive Vehicle or boat with Cannabis Readily Available, contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act 2017,
  • Novice Driver – B.A.C. above Zero, contrary to section 44.1(3) of the Highway Traffic Act,
  • Driving Motor Vehicle With Open Container of Liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act.

The accused was released on an Appearance Notice and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Espanola on May 3, 2021.
