A Talk with Water Warriors: Autumn Peltier and Mother

A still from the film "Water Walker" of Autumn Peltier.

The Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students Association hosted a talk with Autumn Peltier and her mother Stephanie Peltier, “Our Water, Our Future: A Conversation with Water Defenders.”

This talk was in alignment with the Sugar Moon, which is celebrated as the Anishinaabe New Year. This marks the time of year where the sweet water begins to run, and the medicine it produces balances the blood and provides healing.

Autumn Peltier is a 16 year old water defender from Wiikwenkoong Unceded Anishinaabe Territory, Manitoulin Island.  She has spoken several times at the United Nations to advocate for Water rights.

Autumn is the Chief Water Commissioner for the Anishinaabek Nation and was nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

She continues the work of her late Aunt Josephine Mandamin, who created the Water Walk Ceremony to bring awareness to Water access and sustainability.

Autumn had a film made about her journey leading up to speaking at the United Nations in New York City on World Water Day 2019.  She stood up against world leaders to speak out for First Nations living under boil water advisories as an activist for the water.

Autumn and her mother Stephanie have been travelling the world to advocate for the protection of the water for all beings on earth.

They joined the Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students Association on zoom to talk about the maple harvest, cycles of the moon, the breaking of the ice as the seasons change, and our responsibilities as humans to restore, defend, and ensure clean water for all.

The stories shared in the zoom meet with Autumn and Stephanie were sacred memories and stories of their relation to water and land through the teachings passed down by the Elders in their lives.

It was such an honour to listen and join in on this talk with Water Defenders.

Follow and support Autumn’s journey as she advocates for First Nations Water rights.
