Driver Attempts to Evade Police, Spike Belt Successfully Deployed


(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – On July 4, 2021, shortly after 5:00 p.m., members from the East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were advised by members of Chapleau OPP that they had a vehicle fail to stop and was now southbound on Highway 129. The vehicle was involved in a motor vehicle collision in the Town of Chapleau and had left the scene.

East Algoma (Elliot Lake) OPP located the vehicle on Black Creek Road north of Elliot Lake. A spike belt was deployed successfully and the driver was subsequently arrested.

As a result, Shawn GRAVELLE, 39 years-of-age from Elliot Lake was charged with:

  • Dangerous Operation, contrary to section 320.13(1) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Flight from Peace Officer, contrary to section 320.17 of the CC
  • Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand contrary to section 320.15(1) of the CC
  • Resist Peace Officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario court of Justice in Elliot Lake on September 7, 2021.
