Technical experts called in to find source of gas leak suspected in Wheatley blast

WHEATLEY, Ont. — Technical experts are being sent to a small community in southwestern Ontario to find the source of a gas leak suspected of causing an explosion last week.

Twenty people required medical attention and a building was levelled after the blast that took place in Wheatley, Ont., last Thursday.

The chief administrative officer of Chatham-Kent, which includes Wheatley, says a hydrogen sulfide gas leak is thought to be behind the blast and could reoccur in the future.

Don Shropshire says technical experts from the provincial government will be investigating what caused the leak.

Chatham Kent’s fire chief says crews are methodically removing debris from the blast site to get to the suspected source of the leak.

Local officials say one person injured in the blast remains in hospital in stable condition.
