Municipality of Huron Shores announces change in Council Composition

Effective for the 2022 Municipal Election

The Corporation of the Municipality of Huron Shores passed By-law #21-66 at the December
8th Regular Meeting of Council, reducing the total number of Councillors from 8 to 6, with
the composition to be established as follows:

• 1 councillor to be elected by the electors of each Ward (1 – 4);
• 1 councillor to be elected by the electors of Wards 1 and 2; and
• 1 councillor to be elected by the electors of Wards 3 and 4;

These will combine for a total of 6 councillors, with the Mayor to be elected at large. The Municipality will continue to be comprised of four wards as currently configured. Council has deliberated the size of Council a number of times since the 1999 amalgamation.

A petition received in 2013, signed by approximately 7% of the electors, requested that the
composition of Council be reduced from 8 to 4, with Mayor to be elected at-large. Council also addressed motions on 2 other separate occasions. In preparation for implementation for the 2022 Municipal Election, a Special Meeting was held on October 20, 2021 to further deliberate the matter, with Resolution No. 21-30-02 being passed by a vote of 5 to 3.
