Prior collision investigation results in OPP laying impaired charge

(JOHNSON TOWNSHIP, ON) – On April 7, 2022, the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) charged a person in relation to a prior motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 near Stobie Creek in Johnson Township.

On September 4, 2021, at approximately 7:15 p.m., police were called to that location in relation to a possible impaired driver who crashed their car. Investigation determined that a westbound pick-up truck entered the ditch, lost control and rolled over, landing on top of the guardrails. An odour of an alcoholic beverage emanated from the driver’s breath. However, due to the circumstances police required a blood test be completed. The Center of Forensic Sciences, Algoma District Paramedic Services and Johnson Township Fire Department assisted with the investigation.

Daniel DINGWALL, 34 years-of-age from Sault Ste. Marie was charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired- Alcohol and Drugs, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
  • Operation While Impaired-Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus), contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the CC

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on May 5, 2022.

This charge marks the 11th driver charged under Criminal Impaired Driving Laws in the East Algoma Detachment area in 2022.
